Requirements, Irrigation & Characteristics

Light Requirements:

Palmetto St. Augustine has very good shade tolerance. St. Augustine can tolerate as little as 3 hours of sun per day. This Turfgrass choice offers a better shade tolerance than zoysia but incurs an increase risk of winter injury in the Atlanta market.

Irrigation:

Not as drought tolerant as Zoysia, to maintain a healthy appearance during the hottest months of summer, St. Augustine needs about 1.5 to 2 inches of water a week. On sandy soils it often requires more frequent watering, for example, 3/4 inch of water every third day. A light green-grey color and narrowing of leaves indicate that it is time to water.
